Work Parties on the Calendar

Greetings Friends and Neighbors,

After three months of ‘vacation’ from scheduling community work parties, I have the privilege to tell you about two work parties that are on the calendar:

Shorewood Park on Feb. 11th – to remove those English ivy shoots and continue pushing the big stands out of the park. Also, we have had lots of branches fall – great mulch except those that are covering our new native plantings, so we can artistically replace those. And I will have some baby native conifer trees to plant.

Salmon Creek Ravine on March 10th – The City has generously ordered (and paid for) a wonderful selection of native plants from the King Conservation District bare root sale. We will have enough to begin planting along the creek past the Sewer Treatment Plant fence!

As always, no need to sign up. Just join the party at 10AM. Please call or email me if you have questions.

One of our SOTS neighbors reports..."I have spotted a coyote in our yard several times now in the last two weeks. It is very mangy and missing hair on its tail. He is in the yards above the community beach, along Standring Ct. SW. Seems either sick or old. Please keep your small pets in."

Another Suspicious Neighborhood Incident

This event took place on Saturday evening, and was shared by one of our SOTS neighbors. Please continue to be on high alert, and send stories such as these to the BLOG.

" I just had two young African American men knocking on my door at about 9:40 pm asking for directions to 509. I gave them the directions. When they left, I realized that I didn't see a car, and that they went the opposite direction (the direction into the community). I wonder if you guys can let the neighbors know about this. Thanks."

Neighbor Comments on Door to Door Sales

"Please tell folks that door to door selling is not allowed in Burien, period. They can leave material on your doorstep so you can call them, but they may not knock on your door to engage you in conversation. This prohibits people from knocking to find out if someone is home. If this happens, call the police immediately. This would include all businesses who sell door to door. It is not allowed for the safety of the homeowner.
The only organization who can engage you at your door is a non-profit , and the representative must have identification."

Reports now are that 5 SOTS homes were broken into yesterday.

This from one of our neighbors....

"Police have warned that there is a group working certain areas of Burien. They may pose as salesmen, ring your bell and ask if you are interested in having your windows replaced, or some other type of home repair. They may or may not have bogus business cards or other information, but they are essentially staking out the neighborhood to find out who is home and who isn't. If someone rings your doorbell that you feel might not be on the up and up, don't hesitate to call the sheriff's department. Also, if you spot a red Dodge Charger with red rims and black trim, get the plate number and call the Sheriff's department.

Please be on the alert and spread the word!"

Today 3 SOTS homes were burglarized.
Here are the details of one break-in:
Two dark skinned males in their 20's were seen knocking on the front door of the home. When no one answered they went around back and broke the glass paneled back door to gain entrance. Thankfully an alert neighbor was watching, and immediately called the police. Upon arrival the police found a backpack loaded with items that the robbers had dropped while making a quick get away. Items included electronics and jewelry.
Earlier in the day a newer Red Dodge Charger was seen slowly driving up and down the street, and at some points parking and waiting. At this point it is unknown as to whether this vehicle is related to the break ins, but several neighbors did notice it, and found it suspicious.

All neighbors should stay alert and call the police if you see anything suspicious at all. Please report things of this nature to the SOTS blog, so we are all informed and reminded to take extra precautions.

Salmon Creek Ravine Work Party Saturday

Hello Friend of Salmon Creek Ravine,

I hope you will join this last work party of 2011 for our Shorewood on the Sound Community. We will be working right behind the fence next to the Salmon Creek Sewer treatment plant entrance. As you might remember, the area was cleared of Himalayan Blackberry last Fall by Earth Corps when the pathway was along the fence repaired. Restoration of the area with plant native plants was done in the Winter and Spring.

Sadly, the Himalayan blackberry plants have survived in force and are smothering many of our newly-planted native plants. So our job will be to carefully remove the Himalayan blackberry vines from around our new plants. The good news is that the English Ivy is mostly gone.

You will appreciate using leather gloves for this job if you choose to join us. I will be happy to get you a pair if you do not have them. Also long pants, long-sleeved shirts and sturdy shoes. Long handled loppers are also helpful. The city will provide some tools especially for this job as well.

I look forward to working with you this Saturday. 10-Noon.

Burien Parks to Host Open House

Question:

What will the City's parks and recreation facilities consist of in the future?
What are the greatest needs?
Where should they be?

Based on your input, we're starting to have some answers to those questions.

As you may remember, Burien Parks conducted several surveys to ask people for their ideas about the city's parks system and recreation facilities. We also held a public meeting as well as consulted with the citizen advisory board and many others. This information is being used to update the City's Parks, Recreation & Open Space Comprehensive Plan, or as we call it, the PROS Plan.

We are hosting an Open House at 7:00pm on Thursday, September 29 at the Burien Community Center. We will share what we've learned so far and ask for your feedback. Please stop by and find out more about the condition of Burien's parks system, and to see what ideas are emerging about its future. EXCHANGE PET SITTING?

Wondering if anyone in the neighborhood is interested in trading dogsitting services. I am going out of town at the end of the month. Looking for a dog friendly family to take Gabe, my good natured Golden Retriever, for about a week. Would be happy to take your dog or cat in exchange at some future date or if you have a responsible child who wants the experience I would be happy to pay for his care in your home.

Gabe is a very friendly Golden. Gets along great with people and other pets including cats or small dogs. He is neutered. I will provide all food, food dish, his bed, leash etc. Completely house trained and reasonably obedient to most common commands.

NATIONAL BACKYARD HABITIAT PROGRAM-SPEAKER TO BE AT SUSTAINABLE BURIEN ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 14, 2011-AT THE BURIEN PUBLIC LIBRARY

Courtney Sullivan, Education Manager for the Pacific Region of National Wildlife Federation will be speaking at the Sustainable Burien meeting on Sunday August 14th at 2pm. She will discuss NWF’s Certified Wildlife Habitat program and how individuals and communities can get involved. The Certified Wildlife Habitat program encourages people to create havens for wildlife in their own backyards by providing the basic elements that all wildlife need. Our program reaches beyond your backyard to engage communities in transforming backyards, schoolyards, businesses, community gardens, parkland and other spaces into environmentally-friendly landscapes for wildlife. The program has turned into a movement in Washington, with over 32 actively engaged communities, 130 schoolyard habitats, and nearly 7,000 backyard habitats working to identify, restore, connect, and protect natural habitat areas that are critical to wildlife. www.nwf.org/gardenforwildlife <http://www.nwf.org/gardenforwildlife>

Burien can become one of the communities that is recognized for the protection of backyard habitats, if enough people join in the program and register their yards. The Shorewood community is great for this program.

The Burien Rain Water Tour discusses watershed and polluted basics and provides and introduction to Low Impact Developments suitable for city parks and personal homes alike. Experts on Low Impact Development, members of the Enviromental Science Center and community members will join the tour and provide insight on the polluted runoff system and low impact development within Burien. The tour begins at the lower parking lot of Seahurst Park with an introduction to polluted runoff and the impacts it has on us as everyday citizens. From there we will proceed through the park to the Burien Raingarden Cluster to hear from homeowners about the process of implementing a raingarden. We will then walk back to our starting location with the tour concluded after a Q&A session with the tour speakers and the representatives present from People For Puget Sound and the Environmental Science Center.

Hello Friends of Salmon Creek Ravine,
Just two more work parties are scheduled for 2011 – this Saturday, July 9th and September 10th from 10 am to Noon. For both we meet at the upper entrance, 131st SW and 14th SW. You may park along 14th SW and cross 131st to access the trail by the sign.
The entrance to the trail has become quite overgrown, so our main mission will be to clear it so we can get to the Ivy winding its way into the wetlands below. I will bring tools and gloves, tarps, water and snacks.

FYI neighbors,

Last Tuesday morning our next door neighbor saw a couple looking though the recycle bins on 120th, around 9am, before the truck had been by for collection. This could have been perfectly innocent, but it's a good reminder not to toss important papers into the recycle bin. Use your shredder. (Shredder contents can be placed in a paper bag and be added to the clean green.) Even credit card offers can put you at risk for identity theft.

Shorewood Elementary to Unveil Stained Glass Windows at ArtWalk & Auction

Shorewood Elementary PTA invites art lovers and school supporters of all ages to its ArtWalk & Silent Auction in the school gym from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 29.

The evening includes coffee and dessert, raffles, 19 classroom projects for silent auction, plus art stations for young and old to try creating a masterpiece. Class projects up for bid range from striking pieces of framed art, outdoor sculptures, quilts, artful furniture, hand-decorated planters and a birdbath.

The star of the show will be the unveiling of a series of stained glass windows funded by the Washington State Arts Commission in partnership with Highline School District. The Art in Public Places project, hosted at Shorewood’s new school and titled “School of Fish,” features colorful student-created art; the windows were designed and installed by Ellensburg artist Julie Prather.

Among Shorewood parents leading the classroom projects are professional artists and others who should be. So, here’s a heads up to anyone who collects art: Artist Vern White donated his time and materials to help his son’s fourth grade class create a 76-inch-tall metal sculpture, to be painted candy apple red and dubbed “Bob’s Wishes.” Come place your bids!

Entrance to the ArtWalk & Auction is free and open to all ages. Please help PTA support our local public school by bidding generously or making a tax-deductible donation.

The native plants in Shorewood Park are leafing out and the forest is healthier in areas that have been restored. We meet by the entrance on 28th Ave. SW.

For those of you who have worked the discouraging area along the trail above the steps, you are in for a wonderful surprise. Shorewood Park’s Ivy collection has been dented significantly by 4 T.E.C (formerly Evergreen HS) seniors and their friends in fulfillment of their Senior Culminating projects. They have been very responsible in protecting the native Salal, Oregon Grape and Sword Ferns encountered under the Ivy. Today they removed a lot more ivy in preparation for planting we will do this Saturday. Under the umbrella of the Environmental Science Center, Kent Horton, retired Director at Camp Waskowitz, and I have been the mentors for this work.

If you have walked the trail recently, you will have noticed that the park has been marked by graffiti. Burien Parks has been notified and assured me that as soon as it dries, they will remove the graffiti. Also, please keep a watch for people walking down steep banks as this causes severe erosion in the park.

Part 150 Noise Study Open House - April 9 at Sea-Tac Airport’s Arrivals Hall

The fourth in a series of public events for Sea-Tac Airport’s Part 150 Noise Study will be April 9 at Sea-Tac Airport’s Arrivals Hall. The Part 150 Study is looking at ways to reduce aircraft noise impacts on communities around Sea-Tac Airport. Drop by anytime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

At the open house, there will be a number of stations staffed by Port staff and consultants. Some of the topics at the stations include:
The new, still in draft form, noise remedy boundary, which determines insulation eligibility.
Discussion of noise abatement programs.
Potential new sound insulation programs.
An update on the Hush House, designed to suppress aircraft engine testing noise.

Participants can also sign up for airfield bus tours throughout the day (space is limited).

The Arrivals Hall is at the south end of the main terminal, baggage claim level. Park at the south end of the airport garage, on floors 5 through 8, near the yellow or green elevators, rows N through U. Take the elevator to floor 4 of the garage and walk across skybridge 1 to the main terminal. Look for signs directing you to the Arrivals Hall, next to baggage claim carousel 1. Parking will be validated.

Salmon Creek Ravine Work Party Saturday

Hello Friends of Salmon Creek Ravine,
Please come work with us this Saturday, 10-Noon, at the entrance to the Ravine by the Salmon Creek Sewer Treatment Plant. The plan is to remove remaining Himalayan Blackberry roots and plant native plants. For this work party I have 10 plants each of Serviceberry, Oceanspray, Oregon Ash, Kinnickinnick and Sword Fern. They are all bare root plants, ready to go into the earth right now, so we need your help. Earth Corps will be back for a day next week to work restoration on the steep slopes of the creek.

SOTS Air Raid

In the last week we have experienced 3 close encounters with bald eagles. Each time, our children have been out on the sports court with our dogs. Out of nowhere the eagles swooped down extremely close, coming as low as the roof line of our house. On one occasion two showed up within minutes of one another. It seems unlikely that they would be preying on our dogs as one is a Newfoundland and the other is a Goldendoodle. We do have a very small dog, but she has always been in the house during the visits.

Has anyone else seen the eagles flying in unusually close range?

Shorewood Park - first Work Party in 2011 - February 12th

Hello Intrepid Ivy-Pullers,

Please come work with us this Saturday for two short hours. Join your neighbors as we rid areas of Shorewood Park already cleared of Ivy of rogue shoots. The native plants in Shorewood Park have survived the winter well and we will assure that they stay free of invading bully plants. We start at 10 AM and meet by the entrance on 28th Ave. SW.

For those of you who have worked the discouraging area along the trail above the steps, you are in for a wonderful surprise. Shorewood Park’s Ivy collection has been dented significantly by 3 Evergreen seniors in fulfillment of their Senior Culminating project. They have been very responsible in protecting the native Salal, Oregon Grape and Sword Ferns encountered under the Ivy. Last Friday they brought friends and planted Snowberry and Hemlock. Under the umbrella of the Environmental Science Center, Kent Horton, retired Director at Camp Waskowitz, and I have been the mentors for this work.

I have been reviewing EarthCorps Vegetation Management plans for Eagle Landing Park and learned that invasive-covered terrain prevents the germination of new trees. Shorewood Park has many mature, healthy Douglas Fir, but few juvenile Douglas Fir, other than the ones we have planted. At our work party, we will have the opportunity to plant more young Douglas Fir that have been raised at the Salmon Creek alternative high school’s native plant nursery.

Let’s send our thoughts of healing to Fred who would be with us but for a medical challenge. Fred has the world record for pulling Ivy and has cared for Shorewood Park for the last 30 years.

Most Original: 12237 Marine View Dr SW - Kevin and April Sunderland made the best possible use of their limited space.

Highest Wattage: 12805 Shorewood Dr SW - A close vote for first place, Eric and Jennifer Moe went all out this year with an extensive display visible throughout most of the neighborhood. And even added some LED, assuring them this award.

Runner-Up: 12827 Shorecrest Dr SW - Mike and Kathy Ellis had a tasteful display. A little hard to get the full effect from the street, it makes you stop and linger to take it all in.

Grand Prize: 11920 27th Pl SW - Dominic and Valerie Stordahl have the largest, most captivating display in the neighborhood this year. Animated reindeer and even a hot air balloon - Well deserving of first place, which it turns out their kids were counting on winning.

Honorable mentions go to the following: 12158 Shorewood Dr SW, 12692 Shorewood Dr SW, 12654 Shorewood Dr SW, and 12043 Standring Ct SW – all were nominated for prizes by this year’s panel of judges.

Science Project in Salmon Creek Ravine

Students from New Start High School worked for 8 hours at Salmon Creek Ravine to completely grub the Himalayan Blackberry roots from along the creek, and all the way to the fire hydrant. They also completed the job of removing the Ivy from the fence.

Their teacher, Bev Mowrer, came to our November work party. She is so gung ho and energetic that she got her students motivated as well! The Environmental Science Center funded naturalists to do some classes and guide the students. The city provided transportation, tools, and most importantly, a truck to cart off garbage. The kids even loaded the truck.

SOTS HOME DECORATING CONTEST

This year we will be observing our 15th holiday home-lighting contest here in Shorewood! For fifteen years running we have been semi–consistent in bringing to your attention the best and least tasteful displays of illuminating holiday cheer found within our boundaries.
[drum roll] This year’s categories are: Grand Prize, Runner Up, Most Original, and Highest Wattage.
You’re right, same as last year. But there is one important change to this year’s judging criteria: Efficiency. In the past our coveted Highest Wattage award was decided by whether or not the judges needed to squint when observing your display. This year we will be going green by also taking into consideration your display’s efficiency. So setting a beacon for life on other planets is still okay, but sucking enough power to brown down your neighborhood while doing it will lose you points in the final tally. I’ll give you a hint on how to win: Can you spell L.E.D? Also, if you really want to win this class calculate and send us your total wattage.
If you want to be eligible for winning one or more of these categories you need not apply, but you must have your decorations lit by the night of Dec 19 when the judges will be prowling about the neighborhood. Winners will find a sign temporarily placed in front of their home designating their superiority over the rest of us and free dues for next year. They may also receive a glorious prize of some kind commemorating the event for future generations. We’re just not organized enough to know yet, so if they do get something else it will be a surprise to us all.

Truck Break-In on 12/1

Important notice from one of our SOTS neighbors...

I just wanted to warn our Shorewood neighbors that this morning we discovered my husband’s work truck was broken into sometime last night or early this morning. This is our second vehicle break-in within the past two years. We live in the south end of Shorewood and the truck was parked in our driveway. While the vehicle was locked, it appears they used a lock-picking tool. We did call the non-emergency Burien police number and they sent an officer out to file a police report.Tools and personal documents were among the items stolen.

Salmon Creek Ravine Workparty this Saturday - Start at Salmon Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant

Hello,

Please join us this Saturday at 10 AM to see the accomplishments of COB Parks and the Earth Corps. The path next to the Treatment plant fence has been leveled, widened and graveled, safe now for walkers of all ages. And the staff of the treatment plant has voluntarily cut most of the Ivy off of the fence!

Work still remains and it is now up to us volunteers to remove the remnants of Himalayan Blackberry and English Ivy near the pathway and prepare the ground for restoration with native plants. Hopefully planting may begin in late November or early December. Let me know if you would like to participate in planting parties. Some of these will be during the week, as we have interest in this activity from High School groups.

Work ends at Noon with bagels and cream cheese and other goodies. I have a bucket of gloves and tools for grubbing.

Suspicious Visitor

One of our alert SOTS neighbors sent this warning out today....

A man who had an orange construction-type vest on came and rang our doorbell today. I opened the door and he said something like, "I do construction." I immediately knew he wasn't here on official business so I told him to leave and closed the door. As he walked away I noticed on the back of his vest it said "Seattle Parks & Recreation" with their logo. He was driving a red saturn 2 door car which he parked in my driveway, license # ABV4304. He was a black man, maybe in his late 40s-early 50s.
He left as soon as I asked and didn't give me any trouble, but overall it was a little strange. He may just be an honest man looking for work, but you never know. I called the King County police non-emergency number and made a report.
I was told if I see him again or he approaches another home to make a report either by calling 911 or the non-emergency # 296-3311

Event for Canine Cancer

Hi,

I need your help. If you haven't heard, I am organizing Seattle's 2 Million Dogs Puppy Up! Walk. The event will raise money for canine cancer and comparative oncology research, which benefits people as well as dogs.

Seattle is one of 12 cities participating in the Walk and I'm really proud to say that Seattle is currently the top fundraiser for this event!

I apologize if you have already donated (thank you!) and I really hate pestering people, especially in this economy, but I have learned that charity work 'ain't no place for sissies or for having inhibitions. So, here's the deal:

The city that raises the most funds by midnight this Monday, Oct 25th, will have the honor of having Luke, Hudson and Murphy (the man and the dogs behind 2 Million Dogs) walking with them on November 7th. Seattle is currently in a battle with Ft. Collins Colorado, and they mean to win to prove that they are bigger dog lovers then we are. So, if you have been meaning to donate, doing it this weekend could make all the difference. I hope you will support me, even a $5 donation helps our cause and will help to keep Seattle in the lead.

Pathway Improvements for Salmon Creek Ravine!

Hello Friends of Salmon Creek Ravine,

We have some wonderful news for our ravine. Burien City Parks Manager, Steve Roemer, secured a big grant from King Conservation District for city park work, such as invasive plant removal and trail improvements. He determined to use nearly $9000 of that grant for Salmon Creek Ravine - for improvements to the pathway along the wastewater treatment plant fence as well as removal of an 8 foot swath of Himalayan Blackberry between the path and the creek!

Earth Corps will do the work and will be on site from Oct. 12-14th. Bill Brosseau from Earth Corps has provided the work specifications and will supervise the crew. Bill encouraged me to stop by and cheer the Earth Corps workers on, so please consider this your invitation to do so!

After the pathway and invasive removal are complete, I plan to schedule volunteer work parties to replant the area with native plants good for riparian habitat. Our work party already scheduled for Nov. 13th will be one of these.

Part 150 Noise Study Public Workshop
October 27 at Mount Rainier High School in Des Moines

The third in a series of public workshops for Sea-Tac Airport’s Part 150 Noise Study will be October 27, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Mount Rainier High School, 22450 19th Avenue S., Des Moines. The Part 150 Study is looking at ways to reduce aircraft noise impacts on communities.

At the workshop, facilitators will lead three group sessions on the following topics:

*Airport-area noise exposure “contour” maps showing neighborhoods currently affected by noise, and those that will be affected in five years, according to the aviation forecast.

*Results from summer 2010 temporary aircraft noise monitoring.

*The progress on other efforts to reduce noise, including updates on the runway use plan and the hush house analysis.

Workshop participants are invited to take part in all three sessions, and a general public feedback session at the conclusion of the workshop.

Community Beach Tree Efforts

Late last week a Madrona tree fell over the lower end of the path down to our community beach. The CC’s Board of Directors was already in the process of identifying and getting bids for removing hazardous trees when it fell, so a crew should be on it shortly. We hope to have this tree and 4 or 5 others removed from the beach property within the next week or so. Meanwhile, take care maneuvering around the fallen one.

After the cleanup is complete there will be work party planting new trees to replace the old widowmakers being removed. If you would like to help out let us know. Tim Wilhelmi is our Beach Chairman but is currently out of town. Joe Cail is filling in until Tim gets back. You can reach Joe at 242-6315.

Most everything of any value was methodically taken in broad daylight.
Incident was reported to police.

Salmon Creek Ravine Work Party Starts at Wastewater Treatment Plant

Hello All,

We are in luck. A Treatment Plant staff person will be on hand to open the gates at 10:00AM (Saturday, September 11th) to allow us to drive a few vehicles along the road behind the Salmon Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. This will assist getting work party supplies into the Ravine nearer to the area where we have been working on the ivy barrens. We will work along the road where the trail heads uphill to the barrens as well as at the barrens. Invasive plants have crept along the road as well.

As with previous work parties, work ends at Noon with treats for all.

We will continue to work along the trail, removing Ivy and Himalayan Blackberry and Stinky Bob. Trees deeper in the forest await rescue from Ivy as well as a few on the bank and the trail. Please notice the dead ivy on trees along the road - result of work done at our January and March work parties. Or, if you prefer to work in the Ivy barrens overlooking the landslide, you may enter the park at a lower entrance.

Tom will have a sign-up sheet for that area as well as extra hand-saws. Bring your own gloves, please.

At Noon is the 'tailgate' party to celebrate our two hours of caring for our precious neighborhood wilderness. We hope you can join us! Our goal - to push the 80 trees saved so far to over 100 trees.

My nextdoor neighbor and I are planning to have our asphalt driveways and parking areas seal coated. I have found a company that is listed with the BBB and has an A+ rating. The Company is called All Surface Works. The company owner is interested in doing the seal coat work for my neighbor and I. He will come to our houses to check what needs to be done and measure in order to provide cost estimates based on square footage. If other Shorewood residents would be interested, it could bring down square footage cost for everyone.

Pursuing Penny's Pack

On Saturday morning 6.26.10 at about 10am a coyote was sighted in the front yard of the 12140 25th Ave. Our chocolate lab "Penny" was trying to befriend it. There was no altercation and the coyote ran away when our neighbor came outside. It is quite daring for a coyote to be coming into the neighborhood in daytime; it seems a little too comfortable with our neighborhood. Is there something we should do the next time we see one?

The American Shore and Beach Preservation Association has given Burien's Seahurst Park the 2010 award for the best restored beach. The association gives four awards each year to two beaches on each coast.Burien won the award for the area south of the parking lot. The city and theU.S. Army Corps of Engineers teamed up to begin the initial construction phase in 2004 at a cost of $1.5 million.Work involved removing a 1,400-foot seawall, restoring the beach to its natural state and restoring marine habitat for threatened species such as Puget Sound chinook salmon.

Chinese Golden Pheasant in Shorewood

I can hardly believe it, but I saw a Chinese Golden Pheasant crossing Shorewood Drive/130th tonight at 5:30 p.m.

I had to stop and let it walk in front of my car - beautiful bird, but what is it doing here?

Unfortunately, it was headed toward the ravine where it might meet some critters who are less impressed by its beauty than its tastiness.

June 9th Part 150 Noise Study Public Workshop

The second in a series of public workshops for Sea-Tac Airport’s Part 150 Noise Study is scheduled for June 9th at Cedarhurst Elementary (611 S. 132nd Street) in Burien. The Part 150 Study looks at ways to reduce aircraft noise impacts on communities. Throughout the study, the public is invited to participate in the solution and recommendation process through active engagement in a series of topical workshops. The June 9th workshop will run from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Facilitators will lead three group sessions at the workshop. Stolen Vehicle

There was a vehicle stolen from the 126XX block of Shorewood Drive a week ago last Tuesday . The owner thinks the driver of a primer gray late 70's Ford or Chevy pickup may be responsible. If you see this vehicle cruising the neighborhood jot down the license and let us know you've seen it.

*Day of the Sale*

1. Set up your sale to promote a good shopping flow. Tables in a U shape or in switch backs that are easily navigable work well.

2. Cover up items that are not for sale. If you don’t cover it someone will no doubt ask if it’s for sale. Use sheets to cover items in your garage, or put tables in a manner to block people from certain areas.

3. If selling clothes get some wire hangers from a dry cleaner. People always want to take the hangers and you probably don’t want to give away your nice hangers.

4. Don’t be afraid to say no to people bargaining with you, especially at the beginning of the day.

5. Watch out for shoplifters!

6. Get the whole family involved. It really pays off having more people out to answer questions, make change for sales and watch for shoplifters. Also it helps to be able to take a break and hand over the reins to someone else.

7. Put attractive items at the front of your sale. This will lure people in!

8. Don’t open early. People will be prowling starting SUPER early. Don’t let them in; this will create buzz as people descend on the sales right at opening!

9. Set up some chairs for the slow periods. Your day will be so much better if you can put your feet up once in a while.

10. _The Featured Item_- This is a new trick my family has been using for the last few years. Have a small table at the front of your sale labeled “/The Featured Item/”. Write up a few key features about the item on a large sheet of paper for a sign. Works great for slow moving items because it forces everyone to look at it. This item will sell very quickly, so have your next featured item and sign ready to go!

More Bold Coyotes and Another Missing Pet

I wanted to report our cat Millie has gone missing. She is an "indoor/ outdoor" cat, usually going out once a day for several hours, always returning home for her food and warm bed. About 4 weeks ago, we were in bed and had the window open. I heard a sound that I could not place, a sort of howl, or cry or scream. I believe it was our cat, Millie. We believe she is another pet that has been taken by the coyote that has been reported in the neighborhood.

Today, I was walking with my dog near the corner of 26th and 116th at about 10:00 am when a car stopped and a man rolled down the window to tell me that he just spotted a coyote crossing 26th avenue, and he wanted to tell me because it was also going in the same direction. I believe that the coyote has found a neighborhood of pets that are easy prey. I also believe that, from the sightings, they are getting bold and crossing through yards looking for food. I will report my cat's disappearance to those who will listen, and hope that someone will take action to prevent other neighbors from losing their cherished pets.

PS. I also have been concerned at the location of the recent citing, which would put the coyote in the Shorewood Park at 10:00 am, near the Shorewood Elementary School. From the man's description, the coyote would have been crossing from the west side of 26th traveling east, just south of the intersection of 116th.

Follow these tips and tricks from veteran sellers! (Thanks, Heather Ingersoll) Remember the SOTS Sale is Saturday, June 5th!

Before the Sale:

1. Register by the Wednesday before the event. Call Patty Knudsen for your event balloon marker. Maps are available for buyers, and calling Patty means you will get a star on the map and much more traffic!

2. Price everything- This makes your day run much more smoothly, and buyers prefer it!

3. Clean Up- If you are having your sale in your driveway or garage, sweep it up so your selling area is more like a store and less like a place you keep your car.

4. Be prepared for bad weather! You never know what is going to happen, so be ready for rain with a tent or tarp that you can cover your driveway with.

5. Get Change- You don’t want to be wiped out when someone asks if you can break a twenty at 10 AM. Stock up on 1’s 5’s and coins!

6. Get Tables- You probably won’t have enough tables to set out all your sale items, so borrow card tables, use back yard tables, and construct makeshift displays. Put plywood over boxes, and use ladders and curtain rods to make clothing racks.

7. Save up plastic bags to put purchases in for your customers.

8. Have extra newspaper to wrap breakables. If you are selling any dishes or breakable items offer to wrap them for your customers.

9. Tell ALL Your Friends- Pretty self explanatory, but tell everyone you know about the sale. Tell your co-workers, the parents at school, anyone and everyone. The sale depends on people showing up, the more people milling around, the more the buyer feels a sense of urgency when buying.

Second Coyote Attack

Another sad incident involving a coyote.... Thanks to Claudia Disend for sharing.

"On May 5th our beloved 12 year old dog, Bug, was killed by a coyote at 11:30 in the morning. I was nearby playing ball with our other dog, KD. Bug had just wandered up the driveway and onto Shoreview Lane when I heard her bark. I went up to see what was going on, but when I got there she was gone. A neighbor on Shorewood Dr. reported that he had seen a coyote with Bug in his mouth, clearly dead, headed toward the ravine.

My grateful thanks to my wonderful neighbors, Susan, Sarah, Sandy, and especially Cindy, for their expressions of sympathy and support. Bug was close to my heart."

Raccoon Distemper

Yesterday our Goldendoodle was attacked by a raccoon in our yard in the middle of the afternoon. Luckily he is OK. I've heard rumors of other raccoons attacking pets in the neighborhood recently and encourage you to send any such reports for us to post.

Host Families Needed

Two host families are needed for foreign exchange student who will attend Evergreen High School (HS3 and TEC) for the coming school year. (2010/2011)

A potential host family can choose from the following students:
A girl from Germany who likes dancing, gymnastics and snowboarding.
A boy from Kuwait who loves playing soccer and plays on competitive teams.
A girl from Brazil who enjoys bowling and participating in family activities like watching movies and playing board games.
A boy from Belgium who enjoys hiking, backpacking, and playing tennis.

New students are constantly added to my list of exchange students available for placement. If you have a particular country or student interest in mind - please give me a call. Students come here with good English skills, their own insurance and spending money, and mainly a desire to be a member of an American family. Host families do not need to have teenagers of their own; young families as well as "empty nesters" are excellent ISE host families this year.

Coyote Attack

The Hautala family of SOTS recently lost their beloved pet to coyotes.
Here is a recount of the horrible incident as reported by Diana Hautala...

"I let Fritz, our 13 year old dachshund, and Mollie, our 4 year old adopted pit bull, outside in our front yard to go potty at 4:30 am. Usually they stay in the yard, go pee and come back in. They heard/saw something and ran down the driveway . I heard some commotion and called them back inside. It took a while for Mollie to return but Fritz never came. Mollie lead me across Cecil Tices' lawn, to the neighbor's driveway where Fritz was lying and not moving.
I thought he was dead.

I ran home and got Ray. Fritz was in shock, bleeding from the neck and apparently not breathing. We rushed him to the emergency vet and he had severe puncture wounds and trauma to his throat and neck area but he was in shock and still alive. We had to put him down as he was too old and wouldn't survive an intensive surgery.

Mollie had cuts and puncture wounds to her back legs and paws. She was treated at our vet that afternoon. She must have fought the coyotes off of Fritz but he was too old and slow to get away.

We've seen coyotes in the neighborhood and heard them in the canyon area, but never worried about them in the front yard."

Saving Shorewood Park

On your next stroll through Shorewood Park, check out the piles of Ivy. They will be compost by next year. Saving the forest one vine at a time.. Fred Henzi shows a big pile of Ivy removed from around the lower entrance to the park. Bonnie Moormeier, Tom Spohn and Barb Williams save native trees and shrubs on the bank above the trail from Ivy.
